1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
My mom asked my sister and I if we wanted to try rowing one summer at the local aquatic center at Lake Natoma. Sarah and I had nothing else to do so we gave it a try not knowing that it was a sculling class we were signing up for. During the week the coach of the Junior Club team saw our size and said we'd be perfect for coxing. Not sure how we remembered to come out that October for the novice team, but we did and the rest is history. I do remember showing up in Vans on the first day and we had to run for 30 minutes. Good thing I didn't know any better then.
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
I get reminded often why I love this sport. It happens usually when the eight clicks and we just take off. Or when the water is really calm and we are the only boat out there. I'd always wanted to make the National Team since making the Jr. Team. I thought I had a chance when making the Varsity eight at UW sophomore year, but never assumed I could until the eight was named in 2001. That year the coxswain seat was the last to get named and the competition was tight.
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
Best race was last year's World Championships. The best practice this summer was when we did pieces with the Jr. Women's eight, U23 Women's eight and the Women's quad. Just having that many strong women on the race course at the same time was a sight to see.
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
I can do 5 pull-ups! Beery and Volp are my witnesses.
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
You really have to move the boat together and back each other up in the boat.
